SURRENDER

As I sit here eating a bowl of cereal for dinner, I can no longer deny that we are pitiful in our quest to become more domestic. But I have a feeling we'll be back on track next week....

January 4, 2009 - Birthday Soup

Not to be confused with birthday suit . . .

  • 4 medium potatoes, diced

  • 1 large onion, diced

  • 6 cups water

  • 1/4 butter

  • 3 T flour

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded

  • 2 slices american cheese (to avoid gritty texture in soup)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp seasoned salt

  • 1/4 tsp paprika

  • 1/8 tsp pepper

  • chopped chives or parsley

1) Combine potatoes, onion and water in a pot. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender (approx 20 min.)

2) In another saucepan, melt butter, add flour and stir until mixture bubbles. Add milk to the butter / flour mixture and stir until thick.

3) Stir roux slowly into the soup.

4) Add cheese and seasonings to the soup.

5) Simmer an additional 5-10 minutes.

6) Serve with chopped chives or parsley.

*Makes 4 servings

Now this recipe has been with the us for at least one generation. It's cheesy and delicious . . .

"I would be happy just to [slurp the soup] I love . . . on this winter's night with you."

To Be More Domestic

Dear Recipe Lovers,

With the onset of 2009 came the ambitious goal to become more domestic . . . one square meal at a time. We know it won't be easy because we're starting from scratch (just like the meals we will soon be preparing). To avoid being overwhelmed by this immeasurable task, we're simmering our skills with each pinch of salt and each dash of pepper.

We hope you will enjoy the entries that we manage to cook up this year.

Saute for now,
